17-Year Old Sensation Scores First MLS Goal, Wasn't Eligible For Man Of The Match Award

Alphonso Davies, the latest next big thing to emerge from the MLS, made a huge impression in Vancouver Whitecaps' 2-1 win over Montreal Impact in the opening game of the season.
The 17-year old, who was signed to Whitecaps as a 15-year old and was playing in the USL at the same age, has attracted interest from several big clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Already a full Canada international, he furthered his stock last night when he set up former Norwich striker Kei Kamara for the opener courtesy of a pin-point cross from the left, before he notched his first MLS goal seven minutes later.
With a goal and assist, Davies was the leading contender to win the club's Man of the Match award, which is run in conjunction with sponsor Budweiser.
However, because he's still only 17 years of age, he does not qualify to being nominated for the accolade until he turns 19.
It's prompted some brilliant responses from Whitecaps' supporters on social media, who made it clear that he was their choice for the award.

Change your rules. @AlphonsoDavies scored his first MLS goal, the game winner and got an assist. Great job by both of them, but Davies should get this award.- Eric Hedekar (@EricHedekar) March 5, 2018

This is so disrespectful for both Fonzie and any sport award based on merit. Disappointed of the laws and the "promotion'- Peter Czimmermann (@xczimi) March 5, 2018
The poor lad! At least he won the MLS Man of the Match, which no-one could take away from him. Davies looks a very promising talent and it will definitely be worth keeping tabs on his progress.
