Gareth Southgate's next England squad could well see a surprise return, with Tom Cleverley poised to be back in the fold.

The Three Lions host Germany and Brazil in friendlies at Wembley next month and it's thought that the former Manchester United is in contention for making the cut, as per ESPN.

After breaking into the United side, Cleverley received a total of 13 caps for the England side - his debut coming in against Italy in a 2-1 win on 15 August 2012.

His most recent appearance was against Germany, in November 2013 - and four years on he may well make his return to the team against the Joachim Low's side.

Having seen his career take a downward spiral, with relatively unsuccessful stints at Aston Villa and Everton respectively. However, he joined Watford on loan for the second time in his career in January and the move was made permanent.

Under the tutelage of Marco Silva, the 28-year old has been impressive and played a key role in the club's excellent start to the season which currently sees the Hornets lie in 8th place in the Premier League.

Cleverley scored the winning goal against Arsenal at Vicarage Road a couple of weeks back and could be rewarded for his recent displays with a place in the squad for the next lot of games.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Ross Barkley and Cleverley's Watford colleague Nathaniel Chalobah are sidelined through injury at the moment - resulting in Spurs' midfielder Harry Winks making his international debut against Lithuania last month.

And the relative shortage of central midfield options could give Cleverley a route back into international football. Sources from ESPN say that Southgate has been keeping tabs on Cleverley and has asked Watford officials about him.

Does Cleverley deserve an England recall or are there other midfielders more deserving?
