A supercomputer predicts Manchester City will pip Liverpool to regain the Premier League title this season.

After a slow start, Pep Guardiola's side have found their form and a superb winning run, along with recent results elsewhere, means they are top of the table with a game in hand after 19 matches.

And FiveThirtyEight, the masters in crunching data, believe City will lift a third Premier League crown in five seasons under Guardiola.

in terms of how they work out their outcomes, according to their official website, "every team has an offensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to score against an average team on a neutral field, and a defensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to concede.

"These ratings, in turn, produce an overall SPI rating, which represents the percentage of available points. A win is worth 3 points, a tie worth 1 point, and a loss worth 0 points - the team would be expected to take if that match were played over and over again."

Going off their algorithms, City will finish as champions on 85 points, with a +53 goal difference.

If their predictions are accurate, current holders Liverpool will have to settle for second place, 12 points behind City and just two ahead of third-placed Manchester United.

After missing out on a top four finish last term, Leicester City will secure Champions League football for the second time - with Tottenham and Chelsea missing out as per the forecast.

West Ham and Aston Villa seal comfortable top half finishes but AFTV looks set to provide more box office entertainment given Arsenal are expected to end Mikel Arteta's first full season in charge in tenth.

There's no change at the bottom as unsurprisingly it's West Brom, Sheffield United and Fulham who will be relegated to the second tier according to the data.

FiveFortyEight also reckon City will cap off a memorable season by winning the Champions League for the first time, beating defending champions Bayern Munich in the final in Istanbul.

City, who face Borussia Monchengladbach in round of 16 in February, top the table with a 47 per cent chance of reaching the final.
