Steven Gerrard is poised to manage at Anfield for the first time, with his Rangers set to take on Liverpool in a friendly.

The Liverpool legend and skipper has just guided Rangers to their first Scottish league title in ten years, ending Celtic's domestic dominance with a stunning campaign that saw them total 102 points and go the whole league season unbeaten.

After lifting his first bit of silverware as manager, Gerrard is set to return to his old stomping ground at the end of July for a high-profile pre-season fixture, as per The Mirror.

After coming through the ranks at Liverpool, Gerrard went on to captain the Reds and make over 710 appearances, scoring 186 goals.

He began his coaching career at the club when he took charge of the Under 18s side and a return to the stadium he lit up on so many occasions will no doubt excite him - even if he is in the opposite dug-out.

And if all goes well and government restrictions are released, a full capacity ovation at Anfield could be on the cards for arguably Liverpool's greatest ever player.

Gerrard has been tipped to manage Liverpool in the future, with his former teammate John Arne-Riise predicting it will happen.

"I think when [Jurgen] Klopp decides to leave Liverpool in one, two, three or four years, he will be the next one," he told SPORTbible.

"It's going to be very strange if he doesn't take it or doesn't get offered the job when Liverpool need a new manager.

"He is 'Mr Liverpool' and there's not many jobs in the world bigger than getting the Liverpool job. People can say he needs experience and he hasn't been at the level yet but Stevie G is a winner, he's always been a winner as the captain of Liverpool.

"He'll be ready and I hope and think he gets offered the job when Klopp decides to part ways."

However, when asked about the possibility of a fairytale Liverpool return, Gerrard gave Jurgen Klopp his full support.

"The Liverpool fans don't want me to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club," he said.

"They want Jurgen Klopp to continue to be the Liverpool manager - and I'm totally with all of them.

"We shouldn't talk about this, we have one of the best managers leading our club at the minute, I love him.

"I hope he stays for a few more years. But I've got a job here. I don't think it's helpful to talk about this and I hope Jurgen stays at Liverpool for many years."Featured Image Credit:
