Manchester United clinched the first major piece of silverware over the weekend yet the game could of been very different had Manolo Gabbiadini's early goal not been wrongly ruled offside.

Through Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard, United raced to a 2-goal lead before Southampton's prolific Italian striker leveled the game either side of the break.

But Claude Puel's charges ultimately endured heartbreak following Zlatan's late winner. Despite the cup final defeat, it gave Gabbiadini huge satisfaction to score a brace on his Wembley bow;

"I had never played at Wembley. I had seen this fantastic stadium only on the television and to score twice on my debut gives me huge satisfaction.

And we can say I really scored three, because that disallowed goal was clearly onside and the hurt for this wrong decision is same as losing the final."

While saying his side didn't deserve the defeat after applying heavy pressure on United once they drew level;

"We didn't deserve the defeat. We were capable of coming back from two goals down and put under pressure a big team like Manchester United throughout the game."

(Puel eventually drafts him off after a great cup final outing)

Continuing to add by detailing the encounter he experienced with the opposite manager, Jose Mourinho. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, he said;

"When a character like Mourinho comes at you, shakes your hand and says, 'You did a great job, you scored two goals of a real champion", you feel something special.

Mourinho is a special person, and not only for his successes as a manager. He is charismatic."

The January signing also hailed the match-winner for his incredible performance;

"And Ibrahimovic is a natural-born winner. When someone has won something like 32 trophies, there is is not a lot to add."

Gabbiadini has proved to be a brilliant winter acquisition following his start in England. The 25-year-old improved his goal tally to five goals in just three appearances.

£15 million well spent.
