Some Manchester United players 'resented' Harry Maguire's promotion to captain, according to a damning report following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Man United swiftly responded to their crushing defeat at Watford by relieving Solskjaer of his managerial duties.

He leaves the team in seventh place in the league after suffering a humiliating 4-1 loss at Vicarage Road.

The Red Devils were well off the pace on Saturday as they conceded four goals, with Maguire being sent off for two bookable offences.

The defender will be unavailable for his side's next Premier League fixture against Chelsea.

But that news could come as a welcome relief. Well, that's if Samuel Luckhurst's damning report is anything to go by.

He claims that some players within the squad 'resented' the England international's promotion to captain.

An unnamed player questioned why he was discarded while Maguire and Fred were often retained in the starting XI despite their underwhelming performances.

An extract from his piece in the Manchester Evening News, reads: "Some players resented Harry Maguire's premature promotion to captain. A player questioned why he was swiftly discarded yet Maguire and Fred were often retained despite under-performing.

"Even a player's father accepted his son had been 'c**p' for weeks."

Maguire has been the subject of scrutiny for his below-par-performances this season.

And he was slammed for his celebration against Albania during the international break with England.

On Maguire's goal celebration, Roy Keane said: "He obviously puts his hands to ears [to] like shut the critics up but I think that's embarrassing, he's been a disgrace the last few months for Man Utd.

"He thinks if he scores, he's going to shut his critics up - embarrassing."

Solskjaer jumped to his defence and, in doing so, aimed a dig at Keane.

"As a true example of a Man Utd player, Harry [Maguire] is always there for his team and his country," he said.

"The so-called experts have their opinions. He's going to prove the critics wrong."
