No matter how upset or annoyed a player, fan or club official may get following a defeat, nothing excuses resorting to physical violence. However, Dragan Capelja, a board member of Serbian team FK Vojvodina, stooped so low following club's women's team 3-1 defeat to ŽFK Crvena zvezda, that he slapped 18-year-old Nevena Miladinovic across the face.
Zvezda, otherwise known as Red Star, issued a statement on their Facebook page, condemning the actions of Capelja, who was held in police custody following the incident, where he was eventually released after admitting his heinous act. It is believed that Capelja had become enraged following the celebrations of Red Star's players and took his frustrations out on Miladinovic.
An excerpt, translated from the above post, reads:
"Vojvodina club and their players, with tears in their eyes, congratulated us for deserved victory, but our team had to stay in Novi Sad for another 3 hours after match because of unhuman and unsportsman act of Vojvodina official Dragan Capelja who slapped our player Nevena Miladinovic, who just turned 18. Police took him in custody where he admitted this act. The club Vojvodina apologised to us as well as to Nevena and her family."
