You have to be a complete arse to ruin the one day of the year that is dedicated to remembering the moment guns fell to the floor and World War One was over.

Well, the world is full of arses, it seems. Today, a few of them descended upon London's Trafalgar Square.

Thousands of football fans took over the London landmark today ahead of a historic showdown - Eng;and's 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier.

Many of the fans set up base at Trafalgar Square, during which time the annual Silence In The Square was taking place. The ceremony, which includes a traditional two-minutes silence, commemorates the moment the guns fell silent for peace at the end of World War One, on 11 November 1918.

Earlier in the day, the fountains at the landmark in the square were showered in poppies and people came to remember the dead.

The peaceful scenes were later replaced with football hooligans getting boozy and excited ahead of tonight's game.

Although the majority were simply getting into the party spirit and enjoying the few hours before the game, others went too far, according to witnesses.

Gillian Johnson, a heritage warden with the GLA, said it was "terrible", adding: "It's really not fair, this is supposed to be a public place."

It all became too much for this chap, who needed to cool down after getting wrapped up in the anticipation.

The fans left the square a "sea of shattered glass, wet cardboard and spilled alcohol on the landmark," reports the Daily Mail.

"There were a total of two arrests today, one on suspicion of common assault and the other on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly," the Met Police said.

By 6pm, the area was emptied as the fans headed west towards the stadium grounds.

Despite an away ticket allocation of 13,700, 20,000 Scottish fans are expected in London.
