Leroy Sane will require surgery after suffering a devastating ACL injury in his right knee and will be out for 'several months'.

The 23-year-old sustained a knee injury during the opening stages of the Community Shield on Sunday and reports in Germany claim the player has suffered an ACL injury.

He's been ruled out for 'several months' and will undergo surgery. Manchester City have since confirmed the initial speculation with the player set to go under the knife in the coming week.

"Manchester City FC can confirm that Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," the club statement reads.

It's unclear whether Bayern Munich will drop their pursuit of Sane following the diagnosis. The Bundesliga champions have courted the winger all summer in view to a mega transfer.

It's not only a huge blow for Niko Kovac but also Pep Guardiola, who's now without one of his key players ahead of the new Premier League season.

City begin the defence of their league title on Saturday against West Ham United.
