Sam Allardyce's Comments On Davy Klaassen Are Pretty Embarrassing

It's anything but a vote of confidence...

Everton boss Sam Allardyce has spoken out about the club's supposed marquee summer signing Davy Klaassen.

Klaassen has been described by former boss Ronald Koeman as a leader on the pitch.

It's a wonder why, then, the midfielder has made little impact at the underperforming side since he arrived from Ajax for a reported £23.5 million.

Now his boss, Sam Allardyce, has conceded that his uncertainty in Klaassen's ability has meant that he is unable to play him.

"Davy Klaassen is still an anomaly to me, as to will he or won't he?" explained Allardyce.

"If I had the opportunity to play him I would, but I haven't because I've got to win. So I don't have the luxury of saying 'go on, give it a go lad!' because if we lose it's me that gets the stick."

"So if I haven't got that luxury. If the opportunity comes along for anybody, be it through injury or suspension, hopefully, he can show us what he's got."

The Dutch midfielder has only made four Premier League appearances for the Toffees the last being a short cameo last month when Everton faced Brighton.

Before then, the 25-year-old who has earned the nickname 'Cheese Straw' in Holland owing to his stature and hair, hasn't played since September last year.

He faces stiff competition, too. "We're still playing Tom Davies at 19 and bringing Beni Baningime on at 19 years old, and we are without Gylfi Sigurdsson who can play there," said Allardyce.

It seems as though the once bright spark in Amsterdam has faded in the Premier League. It's just a matter now of whether he can forge an opportunity to come out and prove his worth before being shipped off during the summer.

Certain safety for Everton may encourage Allardyce to finally give him a tryout, especially after last week's antics, where Wayne Rooney was subbed of in the Merseyside derby and looked more than displeased with his boss' decision.
