Allardyce, who was in charge of the Magpies from 2007 to 2008, was considered as a potential replacement for Benitez who left when his contract expired in June.

But the former England manager declined an opportunity to speak to the club.

"I was very flattered that I was considered but it's that thing, don't go back," he revealed.

"It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn't for me. I politely said 'no'.

"I never got to talk to Mike (Ashley, owner of the club). My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much but (it's) not for me.

"Maybe if it was the first time around, I would have jumped at it. I appreciate the offer, but I was surprised, I've not worked for a full season.

"It wasn't something I thought about for too long. I thought it'd be better to make a quick decision for everyone. We're in pre-season now and they're back in training."

Newcastle continue to search for a new manager ahead of the 2019/20 season and reports claim the club are set to make a formal offer for Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce.

Bruce was only appointed Wednesday gaffer in January, but it's believed he has asked the club's chairman to be allowed to speak to the Premier League team.

The 58-year-old has managed a host of clubs throughout his managerial career. From Hull City to Aston Villa not to mention Newcastle's arch rivals Sunderland.
