Sadio Mane has been voted as the Premier League Player of the Season in a Sky Sports poll.

The Senegal international scored 14 goals and laid on seven assists in 26 appearances for runaway league leaders Liverpool prior to the coronavirus outbreak halting the campaign.

Mane has directly contributed to 32 per cent of Liverpool's goals in the 2019/20 season, while also winning the Reds 18 points with his goals this term.

He accrued 33 per cent of the 50,000 votes cast, beating his captain Jordan Henderson (31%) and the league's top assister Kevin De Bruyne (20%).

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who have both won the PFA Player of the Year award during their time at Anfield, garnered five per cent and two per cent respectively.

Sky pundit Paul Merson concurs with the result of the poll and feels he simply has to win the Player of the Year award after stepping up in big moments.

He told Sky Sports: "It's got to be Sadio Mane for me.

"Mane is the player who has been Liverpool's go-to man at special times in the season. He's performed and got big goals in big games. He's the one for me.

"Virgil van Dijk would be a close second - if he was at Manchester City, they would be 10 points clear. That's how much he is worth.

"Obviously Kevin De Bruyne has been brilliant, but it's hard to give it to someone who is 25 points behind someone else. If you're asking me which player I want to watch the most in the Premier League, it's Jack Grealish! But he isn't getting player of the year. It's different."
