Wayne Rooney was in the studio for Manchester United's first game under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he revealed what he texted his former teammate.

The 45-year-old has been drafted in on a caretaker basis until the end of the season, following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

And he enjoyed a superb first game in charge.

United secured all-three Premier League points at Cardiff City, but more importantly played an attacking, expansive style bagging five goals on their way to victory.

It seemed like the United players were enjoying themselves with Paul Pogba creating three goals.

A message relayed by Rooney, who wanted Solskjaer to get the team enjoying playing football.

"Obviously Manchester United is a big part of my life and it was never nice watching what was going on," he said on BT Sport via Mirror.

Rooney added: "Once Ole got the job - I played with Ole - I thought I'd give him a message of congratulations and my feelings of how it's been from speaking to some players and what I felt needs to change.

"I think first of it all it was just getting the lads to enjoy playing football. That's what the lads wanted, that's what they were after and he's definitely the guy to make them do that.

"I'm sure Ed Woodward was the same. The staff, the kitchen ladies, the kit men, everyone, they weren't enjoying it.

"Ole's the type of person I know straight away the staff are happy and as you've seen today the players are also."

Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard (x2) all got on the score-sheet against Cardiff.

After a nice start to life as United manager against his former side, Solskjaer now takes to the Old Trafford dugout when they host Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.
