An emotional Salomón Rondón broke down into tears after he recalled the challenge that led to James McCarthy breaking his leg.

The incident occurred during the 2017-18 Premier League season when Everton took on West Bromwich Albion.

When the 28-year-old McCarthy successfully plucked the ball away from Rondon, the 29-year-old Venezuelan international accidentally kicked the back of the Toffees star's calf.

Rondón, who is on loan at Newcastle United, was visibly distressed on the pitch and former manager Alan Pardew comforted him at the time.

"Life played me a bad turn because I was the one who experienced it," Rondon told Telemundo (via talkSPORT).

"I'm crying because, apart from the fact that he's a fellow professional, it was an injury that I actually felt when it happened. I'll never forget it -- it was tough.

"Thanks to God, I didn't need the help of a psychologist because my family [was] there for me, but it's something that I never wanted to experience.

"In all of my naivety, I apologised to him, but it was totally unintentional. I didn't want it to happen and didn't think it would ever happen."

Following the incident, Rondón planned to visit the Scottish-born footballer in hospital.

The Magpies have signed Rondón on a season-long loan and he has made seven appearances for the club so far.

"It's an honour to be here and I'm excited to get started with my teammates," he said in August.

"The clubs were talking for a long time and now I'm focused on the season to help my teammates to get the points to do well this season.

"It's one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League and I knew about the interest of the gaffer, so I'm happy to be here."

Will Rondón be a hit at Newcastle?
