Gerard Pique Takes Usual Swipe In Direction Of Madrid

It never ends.

If Real Madrid win the Champions League on Saturday evening await a line from either a current or former player directed at Barcelona or specifically Gerard Pique. The Barca defender won the Copa del Rey on Sunday and couldn't help but take his usual swipe at Madrid.

The cycle goes on and on, Real lose or Barcelona win and Pique pokes fun at Madrid, Madrid win or Barcelona lose and someone from the capital side of things responds in kind. It would be getting a little tedious if the squabbling that closer represents children in a playground than professional sports people wasn't so wonderfully entertaining.

This time Pique's jibe has centred on the fact that Barcelona often play against 10 men, especially in the Champions League where a record number of players have been sent off against the Catalan side, and the Madrid media love to dine out on that fact.

In Sunday's final Barca played with 10 men for much of the game after Javier Mascherano was sent off and Pique was keen to point that out saying:

"They always complain that we play against 10 and yesterday we were the ones who had to play with 10. And what happened? We won again."

In Spain the local Madrid and Barcelona media act less like news outlets reporting on what is going on and more like propaganda machines for the football clubs, especially in certain circumstances, and the narrative that Barcelona always get the advantage from refs fits perfectly into what Madrid media want us to believe, not that the same can't be said of the Catalan press towards Barcelona.

We await Saturday night's social media activity with baited breath. But will it be Sergio Ramos or Pique taking a shot at their rivals?
