The 59-year-old former England striker has long been an admirer of Messi and frequently lauded the Barcelona captain's performances on social media.
And Lineker once again showered the six-time Ballon d'Or winner with praise when he notched up his 700th career goal in Barcelona's 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
"Messi, with a Panenka penalty, scores his 700th goal. Might as well do it in style," he tweeted.
However, Lineker received a fair amount of backlash for not singing Ronaldo's praises after the Juventus superstar scored a sensational 25-yard goal against Genoa.
However, he made sure that he cleared his stance on Ronaldo and insisted that he doesn't hold anything personal against the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
The Match of the Day presenter tweeted: "Message to Ronaldo fans: When I tweet about the brilliance of Messi, it doesn't mean I don't admire Ronaldo.
"Message to Messi fans: When I tweet about Ronaldo, it doesn't mean I don't admire Messi. It's possible to love both of these super human footballers. Enjoy them both."
Not long after sending out the message, Lineker called out Piers Morgan for suggesting that Messi couldn't score a screamer as Ronaldo did.
Lineker responded to Piers Morgan: "Fabulous goal, breathtaking footballer, but you really should start watching football before making silly statements."
The former Barcelona and Tottenham star's tweet also included a link to a compilation of Messi scoring brilliant goals from outside of the box.
