Cristiano Ronaldo has taken a cheeky dig at arch-rival Lionel Messi by pointing to his incredible Champions League success as the main difference between the pair.

Speaking in the DAZN documentary 'The Making Of,' the Juventus superstar believes his success with Real Madrid and Manchester United in Europe's elite club competition separates them in the ongoing debate.

"The difference with Messi is that I played for several clubs and won the Champions League with different clubs," the Portugal captain said.

"I was [the] top scorer in the Champions League six seasons in a row. There aren't many players who won five Champions League trophies, so this is why I feel that I can identity myself with this tournament.

"Messi is an excellent player who will be remembered not just for his Ballon d'Or wins, but also for having improved -- like me -- year after year.

"I wake up every morning with the idea in my head of training with the objective of achieving something more, not just to earn money.

"Thank God, I don't lack money, so what I want to earn is a place in the history of football."

Ronaldo, 34, first tasted Champions League success during his time at Old Trafford after United beat Chelsea on penalties in the 2008 final.

And the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who is also the competition's all-time leading scorer, continued on his impressive achievements at Madrid.

Ronaldo picked up his second Champions League honour in the 2013-14 campaign before winning three consecutive titles in a row.

Messi, who is second in the Champions League record scorers, has won Europe's premier club competition four times.

But the Barcelona superstar, 32, is keen to match his fierce rival and end his four-year drought without a Champions League medal to his name.

Messi spoke about his desire to captain his side to the Champions League crown last season, but those dreams were dashed after Liverpool produced a stunning comeback in the semi-finals.
