Stade Rennais celebrated qualifying for next season's Champions League by blasting out the iconic anthem at 3am - much to the frustration of nearby residents.

Rennes finished the Ligue One season in third spot prior to the campaign being ended with 10 fixtures still to play due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

That third-placed finish, coupled with Sevilla and Shakhtar Donetsk reaching the Europa League semi-finals last night, secured them automatic passage into the group stages of Europe's premier club competition in their first ever appearance.

It's a huge deal for the club, particularly after two straight years in the Europa League - and the milestone moment was celebrated in memorable fashion.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the spine-tingling Champions League anthem sounded around Rennes' Roazhon Park for 15 straight minutes, with footage of the scenes emerging on social media.

Why was someone on the PA system blaring out the song that gives goosebumps to fans and players alike prior to games, on a random Wednesday morning, we hear your ask?

Well, it turns out that players and staff had gathered at the ground for some celebrations that perhaps weren't as low-key as they would have hoped, it seems.

"We had a small event at the stadium with the employees and some players," Rennes president Nicolas Holveck told Ouest France.

"We experienced this among members of Stade Rennais, with the greatest respect for the sanitary conditions in force. It's a very, very beautiful evening, with a fantastic outcome."

It's said locals weren't best pleased with being woken up by the racket but you can't really file a noise complaint when it's regarding the soundtrack of European football, can you?

Besides, it's good practice for Rennes going into next term, where they will go straight into pot four of the group stage draw.
