Disturbing news in Mexico is that a referee has died after he was apparently head-butted by a player who was incensed at the official's decision to send him off.

Ruben Rivera Vazquez was shown a red card by referee Victor Trejo in Tulancingo, Hidalgo and before he left the field, he is said to have head-butted the referee.

The Sunday League ref collapsed to the ground and though Parademics attended the scene and attempted to save him, he was pronounced dead due to the vicious blow to the head which is said to have caused "widespread subarachnoid hematoma"

The alleged attacker left the scene in a vehicle and reports indicate that he is still in hiding as police look for the man.

Here are some images and information from a local journalist.

A terrible turn of events.
