Maurizio Sarri has explained why N'Golo Kante won't play in the middle of Chelsea's midfield.

Kante's adopted a different position from last season, playing a more attacking role following the summer signing of Jorginho.

The Frenchman, renown for his defensive prowess, has been asked to fulfill a more advanced capacity within the Chelsea side.

But he failed to make an impression against Spurs over the weekend as he was overran in midfield.

There's calls for Kante to revert to his previous defensive role though Sarri has insinuated that the World Cup winner isn't technical enough.

Sarri then outlined Jorginho or Fabregas as his central midfield options.

"I think as you know I want to play a central midfielder who is a very technical player, for me the centre midfielder is either Jorginho or Fabregas. I don't want Kante in this position," he said in a pre-match press conference ahead of facing PAOK in the Europa League.

Sarri didn't hold back on his assessment of Kante's outing versus Spurs.

"Kante wanted to solve the match [against Tottenham] in the first 15 mins but in the wrong way, he attacked the other box too much, I think this one is not one of the best characteristics of Kante, but it was only a reaction to the difficulties," he added.

When quizzed if Kante knows his duties, Sarri said: "Maybe, maybe it's only a question of time 'But Kante has to stay near to Jorginho, especially when the ball is on the other side.

"When he is on the left he has to stay very close to Jorginho."

The 27-year-old is arguably the best defensive-minded midfielder in world football but Sarri is hellbent on playing him elsewhere, should he slot him back in the middle?
