It was one of the biggest talking points of last night's Champions League Group A tie between Manchester United and Benfica.

When Marcus Rashford won Manchester United's second penalty of the game against the Portuguese side after a typically mazy run, it looked like a number of players wanted to take responsibility and fire home from 12 yards.

What happened next was quite bizarre.

Designated penalty taker Anthony Martial, who missed a penalty earlier in the night, was taken off in the second half, which meant it was a free for all for who would take the spot kick.

Romelu Lukaku was the first man to put his hand up and take responsibility, but then another substitute, Ander Herrera, took the ball away from.

Surely it would make sense for Lukaku to take the spot kick considering he hasn't scored in five games previous.

Then, out of nowhere, left-back Daley Blind emerged from the shadows and eventually slotted home. But it left everybody wondering, why didn't Lukaku take the penalty?

During his post-match press conference with Viasport Fotball, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho revealed exactly why Lukaku wasn't allowed to take the pen.

"I'm the manager and I make the decisions. He missed the last penalty and I want him to take a penalty when there is no pressure, there is no responsibility and there is no need of scoring the goal." Mourinho said to journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft.

"But we are playing Champions League, we need points. Even now with 12 points we aren't qualified. "It is an important moment of the game - with 10, 12 minutes to go, 1-0 - I want a player free of the pressure of having missed the last one.

"I'm really happy with his personality and that he takes responsbility but I'm here to protect players and the team. At that moment, I protected him. I needed to protect him because he missed the last time.

"He will take a penalty again when the game is over, and the game was not over."

Surely there wasn't much pressure on the penalty taker to score Manchester United's second, last night?
