There's a lot to pick from...

After making history in becoming England's all time leading goalscorer on 8th September during a European Championship qualifier against Switzerland, Wayne Rooney was interviewed by the FA's official Youtube channel to select his favourite three England goals.

With 53 strikes to choose from, the England captain faced a difficult process in whittling away 47 of his efforts, with efforts against Argentina, Croatia and Poland making his top three.

We'll admit, we're a little surprised this effort against Brazil in the Maracana didn't make the list...

Or this beauty against Denmark, at Old Trafford...

Rooney retired from international duty with 53 goals in 119 games for the Three Lions, meaning not only is he England's all time leading goal scorer, but he's his country's second most capped player, behind Peter Shilton, who earned 125 caps during his career.

The former England and Manchester United captain became the youngest Three Lions' player of all time in February, 2003 when he made his international debut during a 3-1 defeat to Australia, at Upton Park. Aged just 17 years and 317 days, Rooney became the youngest player to score for England, equalising in a 2-1 away victory over Macedonia in a UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying match.

Rooney released an official statement, via his official website, explaining his decision, even though Gareth Southgate had wanted to include him in his upcoming England squad following a positive return to Everton.

"It was great Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that.

However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.

It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.

Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped
me. But I believe now is the time to bow out.

Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful.

I will always remain a passionate England fan. One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side. Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team.

One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan - or in any capacity."
