Virgil Van Dijk Makes Awkward Dressing Room Mistake Before Kick-Off vs Southampton

He's had a nightmare, here...

Virgil van Dijk became the world's most expensive defender back in January after Liverpool splashed £75 million on the 26-year-old.

Just two months later Van Dijk arrived at St Mary's to face his old club Southampton, but shortly before kick-off the centre-back made an awkward mistake as he arrived at the stadium.

Van Dijk tried to open the door to join his former teammates instead of going to the away dressing room, before realising that he actually plays for Liverpool.

Unfortunately for the red faced Van Dijk, cameras caught him in the act.

Despite his slip up, Van Dijk was praised throughout for his performance against Southampton as Liverpool looked strong in both defensive and attacking situations - something they have struggled to combine in recent weeks.

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave them a comfortable win at St Mary's, but just a week after beating Manchester City in January, Liverpool were back to losing ways and Jamie Carragher thought the loss was typical with a larger problem they have.

Liverpool's signing of Van Dijk was a huge high point, as the team's defence was causing Jurgen Klopp and their fans all sorts of nightmares, so when the Dutchman scored the winner in the Merseyside derby in the FA Cup third round he was an instant hero.

Van Dijk actually missed the win over City and made his league debut against Swansea, but things didn't go according to plan.

After the match Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, nailed the problem saying:

"This thing about Van Dijk is going to come in and fix this problem, it is absolute nonsense. That one player comes in and fixes the whole problem, he's not that good.

"If we were playing against towering defenders like Tony Adams and Jaap Stam and you were taking a set piece, you'd say 'keep it away from him' or take the man away. The idea that Van Dijk is going to head everything away is just a joke. It's not happening."
