VAR Controversially Gives Jonjo Shelvey Goal In The Most Bizarre Circumstances
Jonjo Shelvey scored a bizarre goal for Newcastle United against Sheffield United in another controversial moment for VAR.
Newcastle secured three vital points at Bramall Lane after beating Sheffield United 2-0, and the Premier League clash had another contentious VAR call.
Allan Saint-Maximin put the visitors ahead early on, before Shelvey doubled his side's advantage in the second half after cleverly playing to the whistle.
A long pass was played into Andy Carroll who flicked the ball on to the path of Shelvey. The linesman called offside with the Sheffield United players coming to a stop. But the Newcastle midfielder continued his run and slotted past Dean Henderson.
VAR then overturned the wrong offside call and allowed the goal to stand.

Speaking after the game, Shelvey explained his decision to carry on through on goal.
Naturally, the controversial VAR moment was the talk of the league fixture.
Just seen the Jonjo Shelvey goal. Was inevitable that this would happen at some point. Play to the whistle has never been more important.

What has just happened?!
Carroll flicks the ball on for Shelvey who is flagged offside, he keeps going and slots it into the net & VAR gives the goal!

That is unreal. Whole #sufc team stopped as lino's flag went up against Carroll who flicked it on from apparently offside position. Shelvey didn't stop, went and stuck the ball in the back of the net past keeper Henderson who didn't move. Ref didn't whistle, let VAR decide. Goal.

So clever from playing-to-the-whistle Shelvey, but VAR has a real problem with this. Henderson in goals stopped after seeing the flag #NUFC

Seriously, this system is a joke. Yes, Shelvey was onside but VAR causes too much confusion for players and fans alike. No doubt I'll still be labelled an out-of-touch dinosaur by some for saying that. #sufc #twitterblades

Wow. Newcastle go 2-0 up. Dummett clears forward to Carroll, the flag goes up, Sheffield United stop, but Shelvey powers forward and shoots past Henderson who doesn't try to save. VAR and it's a goal!

Incredible in-play intelligence from Shelvey. He knew it was worth testing the system. #nufc

Another VAR controversy, ref calls offside, Sheffield players stop including GK who cohld've stopped the shot but J. Shelvey doesn't and scores. VAR overturns the wrong offside call and goal stands.
VAR is going to ruin football. #SHENEW
