It could in fact be coming home in 2030 after Prime Minister Theresa May said that the Government will support a joint UK and Ireland bid for the World Cup in 12 years.
That's right. If the Football Associations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland decide to go ahead with the bid, the government will back it all the way.

Which means that the likes of Old Trafford, Wembley and Stamford Bridge could be the venue for what is guaranteed to be a truly historic tournament.
"The decision on whether to bid is for the football associations to make." May said.
"If they decide to go forward, they can count on this government's full support."
Back in July, the deputy leader of the Labour party, Tom Watson, also announced that they will back a bid by England to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030.

Jeremy Corbyn has publicly backed the idea on social media and thinks it has the potential to inspire and bring people together.
England actually launched a bid to host this summer's World Cup back in 2010, but failed after Russia eventually won the right to host it, but 2030 could be the year football comes come for the first time since '66.
In an interview with Sky News, Watson was highly enthusiastic about a potential bid:

"I've been driving my kids crazy because I am old enough to remember Italia 90 when we got through to the semi-finals and the country was alive.
"After a very difficult year, seeing the country united these last few weeks has been fantastic - and it seems to me you look at Premier League football, which is the best in the world, you look at our lower league football - which is really well run, the Football Foundation has made investments in grassroots football.
"It's the national game, it can bring the country together, it can give us hope.
