The away goals rule for Champions League and Europa League could be a thing of the past.

Of course, in a two-legged European tie, away goals count as extra if the score is even. A long standing rule in UEFA's competitions.

However, the away goals rule may be scrapped.

UEFA are reconsidering it's format amid disgruntled managers across Europe including Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone.

Not to mention former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, as well as ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

The Argentine manager is vocal against away goals, saying the following in September: "I do not understand why in the return leg a team has thirty minutes to score a goal that is worth more than the one you score at home."

Unai Emery, Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Paulo Fonseca, Julen Lopetegui and Thomas Tuchel also met in September to discuss away goals.

And following conversations, UEFA competition director Giorgio Marchetti said: "They think that achieving away goals is not as difficult as in the past.

"So they think the rule should be reviewed and that's what we will do," he added.

It's unclear when these changes could be put in place though a UEFA meeting has occurred this week.

Meanwhile, the 2018/19 European football campaign resumes next week with Champions League and Europa League fixtures taking center stage.
