Southampton are in need of new talent, and their fans are convinced they are about to sign a former Premier League bad boy.

The Saints are occupying a precarious position in the league, sitting in 17th place, level on points with manager-less Stoke City.

Mauricio Pellegrini is hoping to strengthen his side in order to avoid the drop, and may be looking to prioritise a forward during the January transfer window.

The Argentine boss will be looking to bolster his attacking options with Shane Long (who ended his nearly year long goal drought Crystal Palace) and Manolo Gabbiadini struggling for form, not to mention Charlie Austin sidelined through injury.

The St. Mary's faithful are crying out for goals, and are now suddenly convinced they are set to sign former Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli.

WATCH: Some of Mario Balotelli's maddest moments:

The Italy international is enjoying life in France with Nice, bagging plenty of goals over the last 18 months, but Balotelli's future on the French Riviera is in doubt after the striker expressed his desire to leave.

The Balotelli-Southampton rumour stems from ex-Saints winger Leandre Griffit, who hinted at big news for the club. The craze then went into overdrive after Balotelli missed Nice's game against AS Monaco on Tuesday night.

Naturally, fans blew up social media, speculating about the potential deal. Here's some of the reaction on Twitter:

Balotelli to Southampton? God, we hope so.
