In one of the strangest transfer stories of the year, former AC Milan and Chelsea forward Alexandre Pato has been linked with a shock move to Championship side Birmingham City.

Pato, 31, is currently a free agent after reaching an agreement with Sao Paulo to terminate his contract in August.

The striker, who joined the Brazilian side last year after leaving Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian, scored nine goals in 35 appearances in his second spell with the club.

But after agreeing to leave the club, Pato is now a top transfer target for Aitor Karanka and his Birmingham side, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The Blues have struggled to find the net this season, scoring just three goals in their opening seven games, and they clearly see Pato as someone who can fire them up the league table.

Karanka's side linger in 17th place with one win, four draws and two defeats.

Pato has never really lived up to expectation following a promising start to his AC Milan career, where he scored 51 goals in 117 appearances for the Italian giants.

He tried to reinvigorate his career with loan moves to Chelsea and Corinthians, as well as a permanent move to Villarreal, but he didn't hit the ground running and struggled.

The Brazilian forward then made the move to China and things looked to be going well.

Pato joined Tianjin Quanjian, who are managed by Fabio Cannavaro, in a £15.5 million deal and was said to be raking in around £4.7 million per year in wages.

He went on to score 36 goals in 60 games during his two-year stint in the Chinese Super League.

Highlights of his time in China clearly shows he was way too good for the league.

The winner of the Golden Boy and Serie A Young Player of the Year awards in 2009 could now be on his way to Birmingham City.
