Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has seen his form fall off a cliff in recent months, something that has resulted in him being axed at international level.

Spain announced their national squad ahead of the upcoming international break and there is no place for the Blues 25-year-old, but club teammate Marcos Alonso has earned a call-up.

Morata was included for friendlies against Russia and Costa Rica back in November, but since then has really struggled at club level and has paid the price with Spain.

The powerhouse centre-forward has not scored for Chelsea since Boxing Day against Brighton in the Premier League and has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

January signing Olivier Giroud is currently being favoured by manager Antonio Conte, while attacker Eden Hazard has even been used in a false nine ahead of him.

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has revealed that Morata's chances of making the World Cup are not over, but he has sent out a major message by axing him and he must surely now be feeling the pressure.

"Tomorrow is not the World Cup, there are players that are not included but have their chances intact as is the case with the players included," said Lopetegui, as cited by Marca.

"We are looking to get more information about players, (Morata) has had several problems, he has played little but his chances are intact. Morata I am sure will have a great end to the season and will have a good chance of going to the World Cup."

Diego Costa, Lucas Vazquez, Iago Aspas and Rodrigo are involved for Spain, which leaves the Chelsea outcast in a very difficult position.

Morata has 12 goals across all competitions since he joined the Blues in the summer, which makes him one of their top scorers, but he has struggled to fill the void left by Costa when he departed for Atletico.
