Liverpool Football Club were forced to apologise last night after damage was inflicted on Manchester City's team bus as they headed towards Anfield for their Champions League quarter-final clash.

Footage soon emerged of Liverpool fans throwing bottles at the vehicle, with details later emerging that the bus was rendered undriveable and a replacement was sent, according to BBC correspondent David Ornstein.

Whether or not the incident played a part in City's 3-0 defeat is up for debate, but after witnessing actual footage from inside the team bus as they prepared for the tie - many have described the scene as intimidating.

Manchester City coach Manel Estiarte uploaded the following footage on Instagram, as the vehicle was surrounded by smokebombs and flares.

As mentioned earlier, Liverpool were forced to apologise for the incident and released the following statement shortly after:

"The club condemns in the strongest possible terms the scenes which preceded our Champions League quarter-final, which resulted in damage being inflicted on the Manchester City team bus during their arrival at Anfield.

We apologise unreservedly to Pep Guardiola, his players, staff and officials caught up in the incident.

The behaviour of a number of individuals was completely unacceptable and the club will cooperate fully with the authorities to identify those responsible.

The priority now is to establish the facts and offer Manchester City whatever support is necessary."

Jurgen Klopp also apologised before kick-off, and stated that Liverpool tried to avoid any situation like that before the game.

"For Liverpool FC, I have to say sorry." he said.
