Manchester City get slated on a weekly basis for having '20,000 empty seats', but a study has confirmed that Pep Guardiola's side have sold 1,026,361 tickets for league games in 2016/17 - the 10th most in Europe.

The report states that Barcelona sold 1,482,646 league tickets last season - the most of any European side, while Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid make up the top four.

Bayern Munich, Arsenal, West Ham, Celtic, Schalke and Manchester City feature in the top 10, as the hype over English football comes to the surface once again.

In a previous study by UEFA's Club Licensing Benchmarking Report, it highlighted that The Championship was the third most-watched league in European football last season, beating La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 when it comes to total attendances.

The Premier League came out on top in terms of total ticket sales (13,607,420) with the Championship at number three (11,086,368)

To put into perspective how popular the English Football League is in terms of numbers, League One side Bradford City has an average attendance this season of 20,144.

That's higher than 11 La Liga clubs and 10 Serie A teams.

The Championship had an average attendance of 20,125 during the 2016-17 campaign, as grounds across the country continued to sell out on a weekly basis.

As you can see in the above image, League One even ranks in ninth ahead of the Primeira Liga in Portugal with 4,373,496 aggregate attendance.

Unsurprisingly twelve English clubs feature in the top 30 revenue rankings, with Man City (sixth), Arsenal (seventh), Chelsea (eighth) and Liverpool (ninth) all in the top 10.

When it comes to highest average attendances by league across Europe though, the Bundesliga comes out on top with 41,000. The Premier League comes in second with an average crowd of 36,000 while La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 lag behind again.
