Eibar stunned La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid after goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic stepped up for a spot-kick and expertly converted past Jan Oblak.

The Spanish side welcomed Atletico to the Municipal de Ipurua on Thursday and took the lead in stunning fashion in the 12th minute.

However, Eibar left a lot of fans scratching their heads when they saw Dmitrovic pick up the ball and head into the box for the spot-kick.

Both the Eibar 'keeper and Oblak were spotted smiling ahead of the penalty, but Dmitrovic had the last laugh on this occasion.

The 28-year-old Serbian kept his cool and sent Atletico shot-stopper Oblak in the wrong direction as he smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Confused fans took to social media to find out why Dmitrovic was taking the penalty, with many believing that he is probably Eibar's best spot-kick taker.

However, that hasn't stopped fans from loving the fact that Eibar's 'keeper was the one to beat Oblak from the spot-kick.

"Can someone elaborate on why he was taking the pen," one fan asked on Twitter.

While another posted: "Eibar's goalkeeper > Oblak, Neuer, Alisson, Ederson, Ter Stegen, De Gea, Buffon, Lev Yashin."

A third said: "They just wanted to prove that even a goalkeeper can score a penalty versus Oblak."

And a fourth tweeted: "Marko Dmitrovic usually turns into Gigi Buffon whenever he plays Atletico. Good to see he's apparently Cristiano Ronaldo now, too. 1-0 Eibar."

Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez managed to pull back an equaliser for Atletico in the 40th minute as both sides head into half-time with the scores 1-1.
