Manchester United have relied on a number of key men in league and cup competition this season, and one of those players who is, at times, overlooked is the underrated Juan Mata.

Mata has been superb in large spells for United since joining in 2014, making 151 appearances in total, but the player could leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer.

The 29-year-old's contact expires at the end of the season and according to The Times, Mata is free to negotiate with non-English teams ahead of a move.

The report does state, however, that United will likely tie down the Spaniard to a new deal, but at this very moment he can talk to clubs.

Considering the attacking midfielder was expected to be the first player out the door when Jose Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in 2016, Mata has flourished under the former Chelsea manager.

In an interview with the Guardian, the 29-year-old revealed the best player he has ever played with and it's not a Manchester United player.

"If I consider the best footballer I played with, I look at someone that was not particularly quick, strong or tall. Iniesta. When we played for Spain he always passes the ball to you in the right moment.

The six toughest Champions League groups of all time revealed...

"He always makes you better. It was the same with Zidane. His individual qualities were incredible. When I was in Real Madrid reserves I used to train with Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham, Raul. All great players but Zidane made everyone look better."

The above just shows how good a career Mata has had up to now, considering he could have picked numerous players from the likes of Eden Hazard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Frank Lampard and Xavi - to name just a few.

Do you think Manchester United should offer the Spaniard a new contract in the coming weeks/months?
