Do not rub your eyes. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi might not even feature in the upcoming three-man Balon d'Or shortlist.

For years now, Ronaldo and his arch rival Messi have dominated the Balon d'Or stage, picking up a record five gongs each, but it looks like there could be a new winner judging by L'Equipe's latest 30 second video.

The French publication have uploaded a montage ahead of the Balon d'Or ceremony on December 3rd which appears to show the three nominees - Kylian Mbappe, Raphael Varane and Luka Modric.

All three players played a massive part at this summer's World Cup, with two of those actually lifting the trophy, while Varane and Modric won the Champions League at Real Madrid.

Could it be that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi miss out on the prestigious prize?

Following the apparent three Balon d'Or nominees, players such as Mohamed Salah, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, N'Golo Kanté, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Eden Hazard appear.

But many believe the opening three players are, in fact, the three main nominees.

It has certainly caused a reaction on social media in the past few hours:

Thoughts on the three-man list? Do Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi deserve to be in the running?
