Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin picks up a fine 'every day' at the club for wearing earrings 'and stuff like that', according to teammate Jonjo Shelvey.

Since arriving from Ligue 1 side Nice in the summer of 2019, Saint-Maximin has become a key member of Steve Bruce's squad, featuring 26 times in all competitions last season.

And as well as being a fan-favourite in the North East, many of his teammates have expressed their admiration for the 24-year-old, including Shelvey, who has spoken in-depth about the 'laid back' forward.

In a fascinating chat with The Beautiful Game podcast, Shelvey waxed lyrically about the Frenchman before opening up about his daily fines.

"He's a lunatic. He's class, man, some player. He's some guy as well," the former Liverpool man said.

"If he weren't that good, you'd probably have the hump with him but when he's that good, you don't really want to have a go at him. He's just one of them who's so laid back. Head to toe in designer gear.

"He gets fined every day because he's got earrings in and stuff like that but if he weren't that good, you'd probably have the hump with him but when he's that good, you don't really want to have a go at him.

"He's been outstanding. For me, as a midfield player, you try and get you're head up and we're a team that plays on the counter-attack so we just have to try and get the ball to him and let him try and dribble around 20 players.

"He's so quick - you just don't know what he's going do with the ball - and he's so raw with his skill."

Shelvey went on to praise Saint-Maximin's attitude and willingness to learn.

"He's improved a lot defensively because when he first signed, he didn't really want to track back and things like that but the gaffer's got him doing that," he continued.

"That's just going to make him even better.

"I remember the goal he scored against Sheffield United with his head - the leap. That was up there with [Cristiano] Ronaldo's leaping and you don't see him in the gym or anything like that.

"He's just one of those footballers who's got the electric pace and I can't speak highly enough of him."

As well as his performances on the pitch, Newcastle fans have warmed to Saint-Maximin through Twitter.

The Frenchman isn't afraid to voice his opinion on the social media platform. Last year, he responded to a fan who flashed his penis in their FA Cup clash against Oxford by saying, "That's messed up since we didn't see anything because of the cold night (hopefully)."

Saint-Maximin also replied to a fan who asked what he'd do if Lionel Messi asked for the 10 shirt. "I will wake up.

The former Saint-Etienne winger lived up to his Twitter reputation again earlier this year by responding to a Sunderland supporter who slated Newcastle's U23 side.

It all started when today's Tyne-Wear derby was postponed due to heavy snowfall and in the comments section, a Twitter user wrote: "Sunderland would win anyway lol you're team is shit."

Saint-Maximin then posted a GIF of The Weeknd's Super Bowl performance alongside the caption: "The Premier League calendar looking for Sunderland season after season."
