Furious Tottenham fans have flooded social media with angry messages calling for Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked after the club's shock defeat to Colchester.

Spurs have had a shaky start to the season and blew a 1-0 lead against Leicester City on Saturday to lose 2-1 at the King Power.

And Pochettino's men were dealt another major blow as his side lost on penalties against Colchester and were subsequently knocked out of the League Cup.

Fans have stormed social media with messages of '#pochout' after their humiliating exit at the hands of the League Two side.

Spurs fan Sean tweeted: "Appreciate Poch has got us this far, but honestly times up now. Need Mourhino in to sort this mess out."

And Twitter user Harry Demo echoed Sean's sentiments: "Get out of my club and bring in Jose Mourinho."

While Tom Tozer posted: "#pochout time for change.. taken us as far as we can go.. Champs Final was the best we could manage.. enough is enough!"

A fourth, Steve, added: "It's not just the players who need motivating with a change. I need motivating as a fan."

Spurs were unable to break the deadlock against Colchester in regular playing time and in extra-time.

The match was forced into a penalty shootout and Spurs lost 4-3 to Colchester in a shocking upset.

Colchester boss John McGreal said that he was "absolutely delighted" with the result and said it was "tough work" to beat Spurs.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We had the crowd on board and the penalties are a lottery as we all know.

"I was really confident when Tom Lapslie stepped up, we had been there before in the last round.

"We got the run around a bit, we had to defend well but the more we got on the ball the more threat we became."

Pochettino, 47, was appointed Spurs boss in 2014 and has failed to secure any silverware at the club.

The ex-Southampton manager has led his side to the League Cup final in the 2014-15 campaign and the Champions League final last season.

Pochettino was nominated for the Best FIFA Men's Coach at the Best FIFA Football Awards on Monday, but he ultimately missed out on the award to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
