Schalke Defender Shkodran Mustafi Has Just Scored One Of The Worst Own Goals In Years

He's had a nightmare, here.

Schalke centre-back Shkodran Mustafi made an almighty blunder during the club's Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon, guiding home a delicate header past his own goalkeeper.

In a moment he will quickly want to forget, the former Arsenal defender, who terminated his contract with The Gunners in January to join Schalke on a six-month deal, found himself on the scoresheet through a terrible error.

The 28-year-old lost track of his positioning in the penalty area and instead of clearing his lines, the World Cup winner tried to head the ball back to Frederik Rønnow.

It really didn't go to plan for Mustafi...

It was the start of another miserable afternoon for Schalke, who currently sit at the bottom of the Bundesliga ladder with just 10 points from 25 games.

Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst soon made it 2-0 in the 51st minute, before Ridle Baku, Josip Brekalo and Maximilian Philipp made it 5-0 at the The Volkswagen Arena as Dimitrios Grammozis' side hit -50 goal difference for the 2020/21 campaign.

Mustafi, meanwhile, was linked with a shock move to Barcelona last year. His agent, Emre Ozturk, confirmed in December that he spoke to the La Liga giants about signing the centre-back.

He posted a video on Instagram outside the Nou Camp with the caption 'ready for a meeting' and people thought it could be to do with Yusuf Demir; the 17-year-old Rapid Wien forward, who Ozturk also represents.

But nobody expected that it would be related to Mustafi.

Talking to Fox Sports, the agent confirmed that it is for the German. "I'm not in Barcelona because of Yusuf Demir, but because of Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, whom we also represent."
