Remembering The Replies When Liverpool Announced The £75 Million Transfer Of Virgil van Dijk

On this day three years ago, Liverpool announced the signing of Van Dijk.

Never forget the replies when Liverpool reached an agreement with Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in 2017.

Three years ago today, it was announced that Van Dijk would join the Reds in a transfer worth £75 million - a then world record fee in football for a defender.

But his signing didn't go down too well on social media with football fans slamming the monstrous deal.

Supporters criticised the fee and dismissed claims Van Dijk was a top player.

One Twitter user wrote: "hahahahaha poor man's Rob Holding."

A second tweeted: "£75 million? seriously - considering the defences issues we have, I hope this amount has been worth it but time will tell."

A third added: "Waste of money."

Another wrote: "£75 million really? I could understand if he was world class. Plus if he was he wouldn't be signing for Liverpool."

These aged badly. Very badly.

Of course, Van Dijk has since become one of the world's best defenders and guided Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League glory.

He was colossus at the back as Liverpool won their first ever Premier League title last season.

Unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool and the Anfield faithful, the 29-year-old is currently injured after suffering a serious knee injury against Everton in October.

Though he could be back sooner than expected after sharing a positive video of his rehabilitation.
