While N'Golo Kante was playing in France's second tier, a diehard Middlesbrough fan scouted the midfielder and recommended him to the club which even got a response from their official Twitter account.

Dennis Abbott tweeted the North East outfit about Kante in 2013, urging then-manager Tony Mowbray to check out Kante who was plying his trade for Caen.

"Boro scouts: tell Tony #Mowbray to check out #Caen midfielder Ngolo #Kante before #Wenger gets him. Top top player," he wrote back in 2013.

To which Boro replied: "Passed on to our scouts, thanks Dennis."

"That's great. He's an outstanding creative player, winning plaudits from media & players alike," Dennis wrote back.

"Thanks Dennis - they're going to look," the club replied.

Naturally, Boro missing out on Kante sent social media into overdrive.

"Got a feeling this kante fella will be a top player," one social media user joked.

A second wrote: "Maybe end up at some top level club and grab a couple of PL medals maybe a world cup."

A third added: "Had a mere here lads ain't ya."

Of course, Boro failed to listen to Dennis' advice and didn't sign Kante who ended up at Leicester City for a measly £5.6 million in 2015.

He won the Premier League title with the Foxes and then secured a big-money transfer to Chelsea, where he made it back-to-back Premier League medals.

He's also won the FA Cup and Europa League not to mention the World Cup with France in 2018.

One that got away...
