Neal Maupay has infuriated Chelsea fans after he attempted to snatch a late winner for Brighton from an uncontested drop ball.

Chelsea took an early first-half lead through skipper Cesar Azpilicueta before Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored a stunning overhead kick deep into the second half.

The Blues were handed a drop ball deep in their half five minutes after Jahanbakhsh's equaliser.

But Maupay, 23, wasted no time to pounce on the moment and charged towards Kepa Arrizabalaga's net with the ball.

Referee Stuart Attwell immediately blew the whistle and furious Chelsea players swarmed Maupay over his attempts to score from the drop ball.

And the 23-year-old French forward's actions were blasted by Chelsea fans on Twitter, while others praised him for his next-level 's**thousery.'

Chelsea's 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium has them five points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, who will return to action against Arsenal at 8pm UK time.

Blues boss Frank Lampard said he was "not happy" with his side's performance after they dropped two important points in the race for top four.

"It was frustrating for different reasons," he told BBC Sport.

"In the first half, the game was there to be won. We weren't ruthless enough.

"We got the goal and we had the possession, but we just didn't kill the game off.

"We allowed them to stay in the game. In the end, it was a wonder goal but we were lucky not to lose the game.

"In the end, the tactics matched up for both teams but they were better than us. We have to take that on the chin.

"[The lack of consistency] is a concern. It's something we absolutely have to look at.

"We have to look at the game today. It's a point, but I'm not happy with the performance."
