A Manchester United fan has hilariously embraced the past criticism made about new January signing Odion Ighalo.

United secured a deadline-day move for the 30-year-old Nigerian striker, who arrives on a loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of the season.

But Twitter user ManUtdMindset tweeted out in excitement when former United boss Louis van Gaal failed to sign Ighalo in 2016.

The Red Devils reportedly launched a £35m bid for the former Watford striker, but the Hornets rejected the offer.

ManUtdMindset tweeted out in 2016: "Imagine Van Gaal signed Ighalo lmao. What a near miss that was."

But the Twitter user followed up the initial tweet four years later before embracing the arrival of Ighalo at Old Trafford.

"F**k it. The Nigerian R9 returns to the PL," ManUtdMindset tweeted.

Fans have also shared amusing tweets about the United new boy, who signed for Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in 2019.

United's deal for Ighalo, who spent three seasons at Watford, does not include an option to buy.

The former Nigeria international is expected to fly out to the UK in the next few days to complete his transfer to the Red Devils.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomed the addition of an "experienced" striker like Ighalo.

He explained: "Odion is an experienced player.

"He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he's staying with us.

"A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here."

Ighalo is United's third signing of the January window after the arrivals of Nathan Bishop from Southend United and long-standing target Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP.
