The Dutchman tops the pile ahead of Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is the most valuable defender in world football with a whopping value of £90 million ahead of teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold who's valued at £72 million.

The Dutch defender is worth a massive £90 million which makes him the first defender in history to have a market value of €100 million.

Alexander-Arnold, 20, is the second most valuable defender. He's worth a huge £72 million.

Van Dijk's international partner Matthijs De Ligt is ranked third in the list with a value of £67.5 million.

Manchester United's Harry Maguire (£63 million) cracks the top ten. He cost the Reds £80 million in the summer.

Van Dijk has performed heroically since joining Liverpool in January 2018 and after winning the Champions League with the Reds last season, he won the UEFA 'Men's Player of the Year' award.

He's also in the running to claim the Ballon d'Or, and Sergio Ramos believes he can pip Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to the coveted individual prize.

"As a defender, it's harder. It seems as though it's not just Messi and Cristiano [now]. It seems there's a route opening [for others]," he said.

"I don't know, but if Cannavaro won it then why not?

"You have to keep the dream you had as a child so that it can happen. He had a great season.

"We always talk about Ronaldo and Messi, but the possibility that another player can win it is a beautiful thing.

"If he wins, I'll congratulate him. He had a very good season."
