A Liverpool fan has caused a big stir on social media after comparing Virgil van Dijk to AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini.

Twitter user @SeanDOlfc posed a controversial question on social media about Van Dijk and Maldini.

"i never watched and most of this platform didnt either but i refuse to believe Maldini was a better CB than VVD. How could you be any better. Like what can be improved on?" He asked.

The Liverpool supporter continued by saying: "Maldini was average physically, wasnt even that tall, but clearly had unbelievable reading of the game. VVD has unbelievable reading of the game but is also arguably the best aerial presence OAT and is fast to go with it.

He added: "Every CB could have an attribute added to them. Terry wouldve liked more pace, Vidic wouldve liked to be able to know how to judge the flight of a ball behind him and play out from, Ramos has a red card issue. What would VVD actually want added to his game? 30 goals a season?"

Naturally, his bold comment sent social media into overdrive.

"Simple- by the age VVD became a world class defender, Maldini was already considered an all time great player at his position. In addition Maldini also was world class as a left back and center back. This isn't a knock on VVD, but Maldini has unheard of longevity," one social media user wrote.

A second tweeted: "Toughness, longevity, technique, leadership, stamina, offering in more areas of pitch. Did more for a worse team also (I know what the team was). VD is in a big way about athleticism (not a slight at all, the opposite) and has only been this good for like a year tops. Won 1 pot."

While one user tweeted in support of Sean's comment: "Nostalgia merchant tbh. Maldini would not live in today's game. I respect that he was class in his day, but whilst VVD would COAST in those days, Maldini would never survive the higher pressing game of today."

Van Dijk has been sensational since joining Liverpool for £75 million in 2018. He won his first piece of silverware for the club last season as his side won the Champions League.

The Dutchman is on course to win the Premier League this year, too. However, at the same age, Maldini had won four Scudettos and three Champions League titles.

While Van Dijk is enjoying a great period in his career, comparing him to Maldini seems a bit premature with the Italian icon widely regarded as the greatest defender of all time.
