Just when we thought Gianluigi Buffon would hang up his international gloves after last month's World Cup heartache, the 39-year-old has come out and said that European Championships in 2020 are a possibility.

The 39-year-old, who has amassed 10 Serie A titles, three Coppa Italias and the 2006 World Cup along with 173 caps for Italy, announced that he would call time on his career at the end of the season unless Juventus win the Champions League.

But his latest comments suggest that he could go on for another three years.

Buffon collected the 'Man of the Year' at the Gazzetta Sports Awards on Tuesday and when asked whether he would appear at the European Championships in 2020, he revealed all:

"I live day by day, I do not exclude [anything]. After the elimination against Sweden, I have received so much love." Buffon said at the Gazzetta Sports Awards.

"People have realised that I have never worn masks during my career. [It is] appreciated."

It's quite incredible to think that a 42-year-old Gianluigi Buffon could feature for Italy in the Euros.

Italy suffered heartbreak after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, prompting Gianluigi Buffon to retire from international duty. Although the legendary stopper hasn't ruled out a return.

"I took a break from the national team. But I could never desert a possible call in the future if needed," Buffon said at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan via Goal.

"Both for Juventus and for the national team I have always considered myself a soldier. Even when I'm 60 I could never turn down any call because I have in me the concept of nation."

Will Buffon add to his incredible 175 international caps?
