A brave homeowner in the UK successfully fended off a gang of five robbers after they broke into his family's home in search of cash.

David Pugh, 55, from the West Midlands in England, was asleep when robbers burst into his £400,000 home at around 3am on Tuesday.

David came downstairs to find the robbers threatening his 17-year-old son and Rottweiler puppy Zeus with long knives, baseball bats and golf clubs.

Miraculously, David managed to fight off the masked men and they fled without taking anything, although he sustained bloody injuries while defending his family.

Dave suffered a broken nose and facial injuries in the attack, taking photos immediately after the attack to show the extent of his injuries.

The dad-of-two told the Daily Mail: "There was a loud bang at 3am when they smashed the patio doors to get in but I thought Zeus had knocked something over.

"By the time I got out of bed, totally naked, I was approaching the door and it was kicked in.

"It went with a right smash and there was four or five guys on the landing in balaclavas. The men kept shouting 'Where's the money? Give us your money!'.

David, who is trained in Israeli military self-defence system Krav Maga, said his 'instinct' took over after he saw the men in his home.

He said: "I grabbed the first couple [of robbers] I could - it turned into a brawl and a battle. I just grabbed what I could and hit them with aftershave bottles and chairs."

David was hit repeatedly on the head by the yobs, who were wielding machetes, a baseball bat and a golf club.

He remembers 'desperately' trying to get to his son's room while being drenched in blood after sustaining so many hits to the head.

"We could only assume they saw that and thought, 'we have gone too far' and got out of here," David said.

"They must have thought they half-killed me. In retrospect, we were probably quite lucky."

David's son is reportedly shaken in the wake of the attack, while the family puppy needed to be treated after it received a cut to the head. Evil stuff.

According to David, police later called the raid 'one of the most brutal attacks in a home they had ever seen'.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were alerted at 3.09am to a break-in at an address in Catherine de Barnes, after a group of men had forced their way into the property and attacked the occupants.

"Officers arrived eight minutes after the 999 call. House to house enquiries have been carried out, CCTV is being examined and items recovered for forensic analysis."

The investigation into the break-in at David's home is ongoing.
