Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold wasted no time in hitting back at Jose Mourinho after the Tottenham manager told Jurgen Klopp that 'the best team lost' in their Premier League clash.

A late Roberto Firmino header in stoppage time gave the reigning champions a crucial 2-1 win against title rivals Spurs and in turn, Liverpool go three points clear in the league with 13 games played.

It was a tightly-contested game from start to finish. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 26th minute through a fortunate ricochet but minutes later, in-form Spurs man Son Heung-min equalised to make it 1-1.

After a fascinating battle in the second half, Firmino then won the tie in the final stages and Liverpool walked away with all three points.

Mourinho, however, clearly thought his team deserved the spoils on Wednesday night - and even told his opposition manager exactly what he thought just moments after the full-time whistle.

"I told him [Klopp] the best team lost and he disagreed, but that's his opinion," he said in his post-match interview.

"If I behave the same way he does on the touchline, I do not stay there. That's [only] animated? Do you want me to take the board with the added time from the fourth official's hands and see what happens to me?

"For some reason I am different."

It didn't take long for Trent Alexander-Arnold to pick up on Mourinho's post-match comments and just minutes after the final whistle, the 22-year-old England international posted the following on social media. "Best team won."

A number of his teammates also commented on the Instagram post.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, disagreed with Mourinho's statement and said his side's victory was "absolutely deserved."

"The win was absolutely deserved," he said. "They are a top side - a counterattacking monster - so you have to be really focused, and because they don't want the ball too much you have to play around them and keep them busy.

"We did that really, really well. What a wonderful goal to win it, a nice corner [from Andy Robertson] and a sensational header from Bobby."

"[Mourinho] didn't say anything to me about my behaviour on the touchline. I thought he said the best team lost. It was not heated at all. I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. So that's it."

Thoughts on Mourinho's comments at the final whistle? Did the best team lose?
