To celebrate the birthday of Thomas Muller - who is one of life's greatest gifts when he's not slagging off San Marino - we're going back to the start of 2017 when the Bayern forward produced a moment of genius to avoid the press.

The German forward produced a classic 'Thomas Muller moment' in January when he avoided the incoming media by pretending to use his passport as a phone.

I mean, some footballers go to huge lengths to avoid speaking to the press, but the Bayern Munich star has won at life with this hilarious stunt.

Just look at that face...

At the time, Muller was being linked with a move away from Bayern Munich, and unsurprisingly, reporters wanted to ask him about a potential transfer away from the Allianz Arena.

That wasn't going to happen though, was it.

One of the most likable characters in football won over the internet with this brilliant use of improvisation:

Muller's future at the Bundesliga side was cast into doubt after Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Muller that he must improve if he is to return to the starting line-up following a dip in form:

"You need 16, 17 or 18 players these days. We have a lot of players of the highest quality," Rummenigge told AZ

"That means every now and then two or three players will not be in the team and might be unhappy.

"That should be a motivation for the players to perhaps do better in certain areas in 2017. That is the case with Muller."
