Fans think Cristiano Ronaldo broke David De Gea's career following his stunning free-kick against Spain in the 2018 World Cup.

De Gea's position as Manchester United's No.1 has come under intense scrutiny after the goalkeeper committed a huge error in goal on Friday.

He made a mistake during United's first Premier League game back from suspension as he failed to keep out Steven Bergwijn's strike at Tottenham.

The Spaniard has been the subject of heavy criticism with fans claiming Ronaldo finished him off as world-class player.

Ronaldo scored a brace against Spain with De Gea in net. He scored his first goal thanks to a howler from the 29-year-old stopper before converting a brilliant free-kick.

And fans believe that was the moment De Gea's decline began.

"De Gea was never a mentality monster like, say, Schmeichel. Ronaldo broke him that day and not sure DDG will ever recover from that. Should ship him out before its too late," one social media user wrote.

A second tweeted: "Ever since Ronaldo scored De Gea that hattrick ur man has never been the same."

A third added: "Cristiano really ended DDG's career man."

The Reds return to action on Wednesday against Sheffield United, who'll be without Dean Henderson as he's ineligible to play against his parent club.

The Englishman has been tipped to replace De Gea at Old Trafford next season.
