Lionel Messi sarcastically checked Asier Villalibre's pulse after appearing to strike the player during last night's Spanish Super Cup final.

The match referee re-watched the incident on his monitor before giving the Barcelona captain his marching orders in extra-time.

But moments before leaving the field of play, Messi hilariously checked on Villalibre while he was rolling around in 'agony' on the ground.

The 33-year-old approached the stricken player and checked his pulse in a sequence which didn't go unnoticed by fans on social media.

"I don't know how many times they fouled him, and it's normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly."
