But moments before leaving the field of play, Messi hilariously checked on Villalibre while he was rolling around in 'agony' on the ground.
The 33-year-old approached the stricken player and checked his pulse in a sequence which didn't go unnoticed by fans on social media.

One tweeted: "Messi really checked his Pulse."
A second wrote: "Messi actually checked his pulse after slapping him."
A third added: "Nah wtf Messi checked his pulse."

Speaking after his side's triumph, Villalibre said: "It seemed to me a clear aggression from Messi.
"I put my body in the way, he got mad and he hit me in the face with his hand."

Ronald Koeman defended his star man, saying: "I can understand what Messi did.
"I don't know how many times they fouled him, and it's normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly."
Barcelona's trophy draught continues following Sunday's crushing 3-2 defeat.
