Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been branded 'brainless' and 'pathetic' after a stamp on Tottenham's Dele Alli left referee Andre Marriner with no other option but to send him off.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the 21-year-old went down after a Shelvey challenge. The Spurs midfielder then poked the ball away as Shelvey tried to retrieve it.
The Newcastle midfielder proceeded to stamp on Alli's ankle as he lay on the floor.

Marriner sent him off and Shelvey became the first Newcastle player to be sent off at St James' Park in the opening game of a Premier League season since Alan Shearer.
Shearer took to Twitter to voice his opinion along with plenty of furious Newcastle fans, who have slated Shelvey for his actions.
Thoughts on Shelvey's stamp on Dele Alli? Did that cost Newcastle a possible retrieve in the game?
